THE UPDF liaison officer in charge of the army widows and orphans programme attached to President’s Office has warned relatives of deceased soldiers against evicting widows from their matrimonial homes.
Speaking to over 100 widows and orphans at Mbale Municipal Chambers, Lt. Joy Turyamureba said those involved in the practice would be punished by the courts of law. He advised victims to get free legal representation from UPDF lawyers.
Rose Kakayi, 49, a widow to Sgt. George Namisi who died in 1992, said relatives to her late husband evicted her from her home at Bulako, Muyembe sub-county in Sironko district.
Kakayi said she now lives with her children in a rented room at Bukisukye, Mutoto sub-county near Mbale town. She said efforts to regain her home through the local councils had proved fruitless.
A widow to the late Capt. Charles Kuloba who was attached to the 4th division in Kitgum, said her husband left behind nine children, but his step-brother wants her and the children out their home at Bumakita in Bududa sub-county, Mbale district.
Turyamureba advised the widows to fill pension forms with guidance from the RDC’s office before submitting them to the army Pension Assessment Board, saying badly filled forms had caused delays in paying out benefits. Ends
