ONE of the long-standing checkpoint on the road linking Uganda to Tanzania has been removed following allegations of corruption by Police officers manning it.
“A decision to remove the roadblock located at Kabingo, 20km from Mbarara town, was reached at during a district security meeting held on Thursday,†the area Resident District Commissioner, Joseph Arwata said yesterday.
“There were reports of extortion. Instead of serving the interests of the population who ply that route, it is becoming a demerit of the officers on the roadblock,†Arwata said .
He said, “We have recommended that the Police department removes it with immediate effect.â€
Arwata said since the roadblock has been at the spot for several years, it was obvious that criminals can no longer pass there and it was therefore not serving the purpose of curbing crime.
Arwata said the district security meeting which he chairs, recommended that the district team mobilises the local population living in the area to enhance their own security.
