THE Bishop of Moroto diocese, Henry Ssentongo, has deplored atrocities committed by Kony rebels, saying they were similar to those committed in the Amin era, reports Richard Komakech.
Ssentongo, speaking during the 30th anniversary memorial prayer for the late priest-cum-journalist, Clement Kiggundu, said the current situation in the north was undoubtedly similar to that during the Amin regime.
The Rev. Clement Kiggundu, murdered on January 12, 1973, was editor-in-chief of Munno, a catholic newspaper published in Luganda. It folded in the mid-nineties.
Ssentongo, a nephew to the late Kiggundu, said his death remains a tragedy that will always remind Uganda of its dark history. The bishop’s father, the late John Lule, was Kiggundu’s elder brother.
Bishop Emeritus Baharagate and Ssentongo celebrated the mass at Rubaga cathedral and later held prayers at Kiggundu’s grave.
Ssentongo said, “the services of the media are of heroism, but those in the profession must always beware of its consequences. Truth is never enough in the fight for freedom, but we appeal to you (media) to fight for the promotion of human rights and dignity.â€
