MORE than 30 Bokora Karimojong on Sunday died as over 600 head of cattle were stolen during a raid by the Pian Karimojong warriors in Iriiri, Bokora County, Moroto district, reports Nathan Etengu.

The incident occurred at Alekilek on the border with Katakwi district where the Bokora pastoralists had retreated to graze and water their livestock.

The UPDF 3rd Division operations and training officer, Lt. Col. John Baptist Mulindwa said the UPDF and the recently trained LDUs were tracking the raiders.

He said the attackers were headed towards Lolacat sub-count in Nakapiriprit district.

“The Pian Karimojong attacked the area, killed about 30 herdsmen including children and made off with over 650 head of cattle,” Mulindwa said.

The raid occurred barely six days after 17 Pian LDUs and 38 Pokot were killed in a futile attempt to recover about 400 head of cattle rustled by the Pokot from Omorimor village near Namalu trading centre.

Mulindwa said some of the LDUs recruited and trained at the on-set of the disarmament exercise, had turned their guns against the people they were expected to protect.

“The same LDUs have started joining hands with the warriors to attack the UPDF forces in the field,” Mulindwa said.

He said a similar incident occurred at Kariita recently when the UPDF were attacked by LDUs who had joined them to track the stolen cattle.
