LIGHT Welterweight Oscar Binka of UPDF survived a stiff challenge and he had to dig deep into his experience to edge flamboyant Mike Obin (Zebra).
The perennial contender forced Obin into a count with a staggering punch in the first round.
Urged on by his fans, the Naguru icon clawed back into contention to stretch Obinka full length in a fiery exchange of blows.
Binka survived on his trick of scoring early to win 5-4 on points.
In the overall standings Zebra boxing club stretched its lead to 15 points as the quarter-finals of the National Open boxing championship wound up at Lugogo yesterday.
Another bout that took centre stage in the semi-final action was the lightweight fight where Medi Mwanje (UPDF) fought like a true soldier against eventual winner Solomon Bogere (Zebra).
Mwanje remained on the offensive throughout the fight. In the occasional stand-offs, Bogere battled his opponent with stinging jabs to win 4-1.
Commonwealth Games silver medalist Joseph Lubega (Zebra) stopped Isaac Kisakye (Marine) in round one of their light heavyweight bout.
