THE Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) expanded the number of local clubs from nine to twelve after admitting three new clubs at Lugogo on Thursday.

In a council meeting, UCA approved the participation of Maruti, Sardar Patel and Kutchhi Madu cricket clubs in locally organised tournaments.

The three will take part in the season opener Luswata Cup that starts next Sunday at three grounds.

However, the admission is not an automatic passport to participate in the annual national league that will start in April.

“We have to first study the clubs, check on their commitment, discipline and above all standards before we can allow them to take part in the national league,” UCA honorary secretary Justine Ligyalingi told The New Vision.

Ligyalingi revealed that the clubs would have the opportunity of playing the two knockout-tournaments (Luswata and Mawanda) but will have to be approved again before taking part in the national Castle Lager sponsored league.

The administration and management of the clubs will also be under strict observation to avoid untimely collapse like the case before with former Lohana CC and KICC.

UCA set a refundable commitment fee of sh200,000 to be paid by each of the new clubs before participating in the two knockout tournaments.

Meanwhile, draws for Luswata Cup will take place on Sunday.

Destroyers and Premier are yet to prove they will take part.
