FORGET predictions and what is big elsewhere. Cineplex Cinema recently released the biggest movies of 2002 in Uganda in order of popularity. The order is based purely on box office earnings.
The cinema did not also include figures of how much the movies made on their opening days and weekends or throughout the overall duration of their run at the cinema.
Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, the second in the trilogy, reigned supreme despite the fact that it premiered worldwide last (December 18, 2002). Following closely in second position was Harry Potter: The Chamber of Secrets, another screen adaptation of a classic book.
Interestingly, number three falls to Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring which premiered globally in December 2001 and showed here largely in January 2002. It made more money than most of the new films that premiered during the year!
The Bourne Identity, based on Robert Ludlum’s popular book and starring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne was the fourth popular film in 2002. Oceans 11, the star-studded thriller about a casino heist thrilled Ugandans enough to fall at five.
The most surprising entrant though is 100 Days, British photojournalist Nick Hughes’ fictional account of the horrific Rwandese Genocide of 1994. Perhaps propelled by the publicity campaign, Ugandan cinema goers paid enough for the movie to land it at number six.
Minority Report, director Steven Spielberg and actor Tom Cruise’s sci-fi thriller lands at number seven, while Sum Of All Fears, an adaptation of the Tom Clancy’s novel made it at number eight.
20th Century Fox’s Behind Enemy Lines, the star-studded war movie surprisingly lands at nine, while A Beautiful Mind, probably propelled by all the publicity that followed Aussie lead actor Russell Crowe’s Oscar nomination drew enough Ugandan cinema-goers to land it at number 10.
