By Gerald Tenywa UGANDA contains nearly 1,000 endangered chimpanzees more than the normal estimates of 4,000. The population is 4,950, a report on the first census for chimpanzees conducted by experts, has revealed. Dr. Andrew Plumptre of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) presented the report yesterday at a workshop convened to make a conservation plan for chimpanzees. The chimpanzee census done by the WCS and the Jane Goodall Institute, was the first effort taken to count chimpanzees in Uganda. Plumptre said previously, scientists guessed that Uganda had between 3,000-4,000, but nobody knew the exact number. “It is important to know how many chimpanzees are in each forest because once we know, we can monitor their populations over time,†Plumptre said. The team of experts counted the chimpanzees in over 20 forest reserves in western Uganda in over a period of four years. Ends
