THE Uganda Red Cross Society branch in Soroti is to help prisoners in Teso communicate with their families, reports Kenneth Otim.
The branch field coordinator, Andrew Odongo, said the society would visit prisons, receive messages from inmates and deliver them to their families.
“The prisoners will be communicating to their families using the ‘cross-message cards. This will make prisoners comfortable while in touch with their family members,” he said.
Odongo said they had collected 6,478 units of blood from Soroti, Katakwi, and Kaberamaido districts last year.
He said most of the donors were youth in higher institutions and in towns.
The society has also received blood donations from the internally displaced persons (IDP) in Katakwi.
The society had supplied relief to the camps in Katakwi.
Odongo said the branch would train disaster teams in the IDP camps to manage emergency cases.
“If we gave them information on first aid they would be able to handle simple emergencies,” he said.
Last year, the branch gave out hoes, improved seeds, utensils and soap to the IDPs.
Odongo said the branch would this year educate the youth about HIV/AIDS through the youth out of-school-action for change. He said the branch would also educate parents on adult sexual reproductive health awareness.
The training is to be funded by the African Youth Alliance.
Meanwhile, disaster preparedness state minister Christine Aporu has opened a one-day conflict resolution workshop for LC3 councillors and extension workers in Malera sub-county, Bukedea county in Kumi district. Ends
