COLONEL Elly Kayanja has arrested a UPDF officer, Lt. Lubega, who is attached to Kasijjagirwa armoured brigade in Masaka, over the supplying of army uniforms and ammunition to armed robbers.
Kayanja, the commander of Operation Wembley, told The New Vision that the officer was arrested after suspects recently arrested in Masaka and other areas named him as their contact.
Kayanja said he had arrested five other suspects, including Bernado Kasirye, who was held after a shoot-out. Kasirye of Ssenyange near Masaka town, reportedly revealed that he collaborated with Matia Ssentongo, a worker of St. Henry’s College Kitovu.
Ssentongo was a fortnight ago held and after three days shot dead when he allegedly attempted to escape.
Operation Wembley deputy commander in Masaka, Moses Sserunkuuma, said Lubega was still being kept in an undisclosed place.
He said the robbers who implicated Lubega were providing a lot of information.
