INCUMBENT president Sulaiman Habib made a surprise move, standing down and announcing that he was backing his predecessor Elijah Mushemeza ahead of the Uganda Amateur Athletic Federation polls on Saturday.

“After careful and exhaustive consultations. I have decided to step down as UAAF president and join hands with Dr Mushemeza so that we continue promoting the development of athletics,” read a statement the two-term president issued.

This left only two candidates, Dan Tamwesigire and Mushemeza for the track and field athletics top post.
“My roll is to improve amateur athletics in Uganda,” said Tamwesigire, who was Uganda Volleyball Federation chairman for nine years but now a Mbarara education officer.

But beyond the race to the presidency is the battle between the incumbent and their predecessors in the lower executive posts.

Arua Athletics Club’s Faustin Kiwa is expected to run for his former role as general secretary, incumbent Patrick Okanya will also stand for the same post.

Godfrey Nuwagaba is also
expected to battle it with his predecessor Dominic Otuchet for the treasurer’s post while Peter Okot Omwony is vying to retain the post of vice president - technical.
Former UAAF president in the past polls Moses Twesigomwe downplayed any chances of standing for any post.

“What we want is someone to unite the two factions. Whoever comes, supposing he is going to promise us unity, he is welcome but I am not going to stand,” said Twesigomwe, who denied being campaigner of Tamwesigire or going in for the vice president’s post.

About 142 delegates will elect the new UAAF executive.
