Uganda Grain Traders (UGT), a local consortium of produce buyers and exporters, has dispatched the first consignment of 280 metric tonnes of beans worth $150,000 (about sh280m) to Zambia.
John Magnay, the UGT chairman, told The New Vision yesterday, the single colour Nambale beans loaded on seven train wagons is their first export contract in 2003. In December last year, UGT exported the Lira variety to Angola.
“At the moment, this is what we have. We wait to see what happens when we have delivered this to Zambia, three weeks from now. At the moment I can’t say much, but there is a possibility of another deal,” Magnay said.
He however, said UGT have started buying Nambale single colour beans and large mixed beans for stocking. UGT plans to buy 5,000 mt of beans and 25,000 mt of maize in the next three months.
Magnay advised farmers to clean and dry their produce to get export quality and the best prices. “The prospects for markets in East and Southern Africa are good and we urge farmers to deliver quickly so that they can plant the new crop in March 2003 for the harvest in July to August 2003,” he said.
UGT’s new export centre at Nakawa, is capable of handling 1,000 mt per day and storing up to 30,000 mt, we now need farmers to support our export drive. UGT last year successfully exported over 40,000 metric tones of maize to Zambia.
“Everyday we are receiving inquiries and markets want to match these with increased production in Uganda,”Magnay said.
