OVER 3,000 square metre of papyrus sudds which had blocked River Nile at Pakwach bridge has been cleared, leaving an open section under the bridge, reports Ayiga Ondoga.
A team of engineers from Uganda and Egypt cleared the sudds but a large mass of the sudds remain uncleared on either side of the bridge.
The sudds that floated from Lake Albert, had caused flooding on the southern part of the bridge and had blocked the smooth flow of the Nile towards the Mediterranean Sea.
The opening under the bridge has allowed water to flow downstream but at high currents, according to the engineers who have been working on the site for the last one week.
“We are trying to see to it that the currents do not wash away our machines because that will be a big blow to our attempts to clear the waterway,†engineer Abdul Aziz, an Egyptian said. The Nile is Sudan and Egypt’s lifeblood.
