THE CAF Cup and Cup Winners Cup will next year be merged into one competition, if plans by CAF are approved this year.
The inaugural African Confederation’s trophy, which CAF is now soliciting a sponsor for, would be contested by the domestic cup winners from across Africa and the third-placed league sides.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) has, in a landmark move, decided to radically alter the outlook of the continent’s prime club competitions with effect from the year 2004.
The African Champions League will undergo massive expansion resembling its European version while its cousin tournaments, the Cup Winners Cup and CAF Cup, shall be brought together into a single competition, the African Confederation’s Cup.
The money-minting Champions League, with prize money of more than $2.25m, will become more accommodating by doubling the number of participating clubs to 64 while allowing the 12 main footballing nations two entries each.
However, it shall maintain the exclusive eight-club format with only the last eight teams that make it into the league phase being rewarded with income.
CAF Cup was donated by late Nigerian businessman Mashiod Abiola in commemoration of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
