A lone strike by Khartoum 3’s Ahmed Mohammed was enough to down hard fighting Villa in their CECAFA club championship second encounter at Namboole stadium yesterday.

Mohammed utilised a defensive lapse to loop the ball over Hannington Kalyesubula three minutes from half time.

Though having a fair keeper and defence, it was the woodwork that did all the damage to Villa.

Philip Ssozi, Edgar Watson and Ekuchu Kasongo all beat keeper Abubaker Sheref but the woodwork foiled their chances at numerous times.

“We were just unlucky. One shot at goal and they take the day. We expect better matches after,” Villa coach Micho Sredojevic said after the game.

In the other game, hapless Borrer were eliminated from the tournament after being walloped by Kenya’s Nzoia in the Group B match at Mbale Municipal stadium.

A brace from John Barasa and apiece from John Muraya, Bernard Mwarara and Argwinus Mukhisa were enough to determine the day’s result with Borrer’s team captain Alif Ahamed netting in a consolation goal.

EXPRESS might have already qualified for a quarterfinal berth but they are not ready to take any chances as they play their last group match at Nakivubo stadium today.

Express’ administrative secretary Ibrahim Kiryowa said that they prefer finishing atop the group in order to get an easier opponent.

The top two clubs from group A and B and the best loser will join the top three clubs from group C for the quarterfinals.

“There is no time to relax. We have to continue with the force we started with.”

Express need at least a draw to be sure of the top spot in the group but anything less will leave arithmetics to solve the Group A qualifying puzzle since Elman and St. George all have three points each.

A welcoming 5-0 routing of Djibouti’s Borrer by defending champion Simba, the highest result in the current CECAFA tournament, will be no scare for Muzinga, who were walloped 4-1 by Nzoia.

Muzinga’s coach Ahamed Kebe, who blamed the loss on fatigue, believes that in his captain Elias Nahimana, he possesses the player to stop Simba’s good run to the crown.
