The World Food Programme (WFP) is to deliver relief food to Karamoja to avert famine.
The famine has already killed over 200 people.
The state minister for Karamoja affairs, Peter Lokeris, said on Saturday that the deliveries were expected next week.
“We expect WFP to start delivering some sizeable quantities of food to Karamoja in the second and third week of this month,” he said.
Lokeris said WFP country director Noah Davis assured him of adequate delivery of the food. He said his office was consulting Karamoja district authorities to design ways of distributing the food.
Nakapiripirit resident district commissioner Peter Lochap said 94 people had died of hunger in the district. He said Nakapiripirit town council was most affected.
Moroto district council chairman Terence Achia last week said 79 people had died of famine-related diseases. He said children and the elderly were most affected.
Kotido resident district commissioner Higenyi Kalyebi said up to 530 people had died of famine-related diseases. But the district council chairman, Adome Lokwii, said 67 had died. Ends
