He is a distinguished motor rally driver who has won the national rally championships for the last three consecutive years including this year’s Havoline Rally.
But 2001 Sportsman of the Year Charlie Lubega’s real passion lies in disc jockeying. Ten years after he last set foot in the DJ’s cabin, which he left for administrative work and sports pursuits, Angenoir’s proprietor and the club’s pioneer DJ is rolling up his sleeves again for the job tonight, just for the lovers.
It will be a trip down memory lane for old timers as Charlie, who will be in charge of selecting, mixing and playing his own cocktail of music in Angenoir Mystique plays the music of his hey days.
“I’m out to prove to the young DJs that old is gold. I cannot tell you the type of music I’m going to play. That’s a surprise. But I will do my best to cater for everybody. I will play a bit of what I used to play, but I’ll also play songs that today’s generation dances to,†Charlie says.
To spice up the gig, the first 50 couples in Mystique will get a free Bell Lager for men and a glass of wine for the ladies. In Angenoir, the first 50 couples will each get a bottle of Bell Lager from 9.00pm.
Charlie's passion for music started reaping dividends while he was a student at Makerere University in the late '80s. “I used the savings I had accumulated in my S6 vacation from kyeyo to buy my first music system. I started out playing at parties on campus,†he says.
That was 1987. It was a time when South African sounds dominated the local music scene. But Charlie chose a different path. He introduced soul and R&B music. Soon his one unit gave way to three. Charlie called his units ‘Soul Disco’.
In 1990, he bought Angenoir at sh15m. Thirteen years later, here is Angenoir Mystique.
Ange Mystique, a three-floor extension of Angenoir is a sophisticated and state-of-the-art night club. Clearly, this futuristic, well-thought out complex must have cost a fortune.
Its futuristic furniture blends in with the artwork. The same effect is replicated on the floor. A pool table stands in the middle of the room. Up on the first floor, in a corner, stands the DJ’s cabin fitted with computerised lighting system and giant screens. The whole complex is fitted with plasma screens on which revellers DVD or TV pictures are shown.
In another corner is a bar with waitresses up and down. The club also has an exclusive floor for members. To become a member here, one has to cough up sh500,000 for a year’s membership. The toilets are fitted with translucent blue toilet covers.
Although the club is connected to Angenoir’s Executive Wing, the music is different. “In Mystique, they often play golden oldies blended with new hits and African music.
