IMPRESSIVE rookie Kurji Riaz, who was let down by mechanical problems on his debut last month, will venture into the challenging Kobil 2003 rally next weekend.
Kurji, in a Nissan Pulsar formerly driven by Dipu Ruparelia, yesterday confirmed his entry in the marathon rally that will cover 10 competitive sections spread out in Entebbe, Mpigi, Masaka, Lyantonde, Mbarara, Bushenyi and Ishaka. It is a three-day rally.
Ronald Ssebuguzi (Toyota Celica ST185), David Kavuma (Subaru Legacy), Fred Kizito (Subaru Leon), Adam Mukasa (Toyota Carina), Charlie Lubega (Mitsubishi Evo4) and the royal crew of Prince Kimbugwe and female co-driver Rebecca Kasirye in a Golf GTI also registered yesterday.
Kimbugwe has returned to action after landing sponsorship from Dehezi International.
Delighted by the rally starting in Kampala, hat-trick chasing Lubega was the first to enter the rally yesterday.
“Now I can even work on the eve of the rally. It is not that I fear marathon rallies but the costs and time involved,” Lubega said of the rally that had earlier been planned to start in Mbarara, 260-kms West of Kampala.
Moses Lumala, who crashed last year at Villa-Maria, Masaka, while holding a slim lead on day-two, also welcomed the changes in the route.
“We won’t find problems servicing the cars,” Lumala said.
The rally will start with a super special stage at Garuga double track circuit February 21 immediately after scrutineering of cars at Kobil Bombo road service station.
Regency Group of Hotels and Pepsi are co-sponsors of the rally organised by Mbarara Motor Club.
