THE Vice-President could soon retire home to a posh five-bedroom mansion after work, following the Ministry of Finance’s release of the $640,000 (about sh1b) to purchase a mansion on Plot 4 Kagera Road.

According to officials from the Ministry of Public Service, the Government will save sh36m per year it spends on the VP’s housing allowance.

The incumbent, Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe, is staying in her private home in Ddundu, Mukono district.

However, members of the parliamentary public service and local government committee, still stand in the way questioning the location of the house.

The MPs, who last October toured the structure and an adjacent one costing US$1.2m proposed for VP’s office complex, said they could not have the VP reside a stone throw away from the President, citing security reasons.

But the committee heard yesterday that Finance had disbursed the money to public service which has been shopping the VP’s house for over five years.

“They (Public Service) have written to us saying the money has already been disbursed by the Ministry of Finance and that our delay in pronouncing ourselves on the matter was the only factor in the way,” said committee clerk Obatre Lumumba.
“They want us to expedite the issue, such that they can arrange for the settlement of the matter,” he told the MPs.
