For those of you who may recall the erstwhile Maharajah Restaurant, and may have been aficionados of this venerable eating joint, be informed that the same proprietors have returned and are the people behind the recently opened Nawab.

Whereas Maharajah may have served food that was on a par with Nawab, the semi alfresco ambience of Nawab is unequalled and is bound to give the food a heightened sense of pleasure!

Nawab represents Northern Indian food at its very best and indeed brings to mind the doctrines of the ancient Sanskrit scriptures that state, with unequivocal firmness, “Annam Brahma”, Food is God, to which one should add that like God, food maintains all creatures, all life.

Recently we spent a very lazy afternoon enjoying dining at Nawab. From the so-called Indian coolers, to the starters along with the vegetarian delicacies, everything was of a standard that was rare and consistent. Ambience and setting are an added plus for Nawab.

Getting back to the food at hand, the menu at Nawab is pictorial in content and as the old saying goes, ‘what you see is what you get.’

Not all of our brethren are familiar with the likes of hazari kabab, or aloo gobi et al. And so the words of venerable Chairman Mao that a picture is worth a thousand words are appropriate?

For starters I would highly recommend the mix grill platter. This is especially practical if you are a couple and comprises an assorted array of meats that are served on a platter and is not too filling. Equally inspired and very good would be the veg mix platter. It is so good and filling you will hardly miss the meat!

We were particularly pleased with the tawa vegetables. These are a medley of vegetables that are served in a dry concoction of onions and tomatoes and offer a welcome respite from the otherwise heavily laced creamy sauces that are the hallmark of the cuisine from this region.

For our main course we had the chicken vindaloo and the Bombay chicken. It was all very good and served with garlic naan and jeera rice. The service is good and portions generous.

Just some advice, a cardigan or shawl would be advisable to don in the evening. It tends to get a little nippy.
