UGANDA’S representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly have complained about poor remuneration.
The MPs were meeting the parliamentary committee on presidential and foreign affairs. The committee agreed to summon the Minister of Foreign Affairs over concerns of the MPs.
Capt. Baker Ddudu told the committee chaired by Nsaba Buturo that there is low morale among the the MPs due to poor remuneration. He said the MPs get US$1,000.
He said for over one year, the Assembly has passed only one law. The Council of Ministers is supposed to initiate Bills.
“We are like second class citizens when we are moving,†Ddudu said, referring to the fact that the MPs have not yet got diplomatic passports.
Meanwhile, MP Sheila Kawamara Mishambi, said Kenya and Tanzania complained that Uganda was under-represented in discussions on the community. She said they were questioning Uganda’s commitment is.
