THEY said they have been patient for eight years and are not ready to wait any more.

A total of 183 civil servants in Iganga district have dragged the district administration to court, seeking recovery of over sh264m in salary arrears.

In a civil suit filed in the High Court, Jinja, medical staff, parish and sub-county chiefs said they had not got salaries since 1995.

The medical workers included enrolled nurses, mid-wives and laboratory attendants.

The suit was filed by Stephen Mubinge on behalf of 182 others through lawyers, Okalang Company Advocate.

The workers are seeking general damages for “metal torture and inconveniences.”

They asked the court to order the council to pay the arrears with interest of 37% to each of them. They also want the defendant to pay full costs of the suit.

The workers, who are still employees of the district, said authorities had constantly ignored their formal complaints and reminders.

They attributed the failure to pay them on time to “gross negligence of the district chief administative officer.”
