Do you know that fungal and mold infections are common among children, especially those in boarding schools? That your child is not exempt?
What are fungal infections? There are various types of fungal infections. Fungal infections are caused by very small plants that cannot be seen with naked eyes except by a microscope.
Our bodies host a variety of micro-organisms including mold and fungi. Some serve useful purposes causing no problems. Others can multiply and cause infections.
Athlete’s foot and jock itch
These are caused by mold-like fungi called dermatohytes. With athlete’s foot there is itching, stinging, and burning on the soles of the foot, between the toes, or fingers. Cracking of the skin and peeling may occur on feet and fingers as well.
Joke itch
It consists of itching in the groin and anal areas. Both jock itch and athlete’s foot infections are contagious.
Ringworm infection affects mainly children. Ring worm infects the scalp. The characteristics of rings(bisente) may expand beyond the scalp, to the face, the front of the elbows and behind the knees.
The rings grow outward. As the infection spreads, the central areas becomes less actively infected. Ring warm infection is very contagious.
Tinea versicolor.
Tinea versicolor (luwumu, amazomba) is a type of yeast infection common among teenagers and young adults. It is characterised by small, slightly scaly, whitish gray patches on the chest, back, neck, or face.
Vaginal yeast, a fungal infection, according to some doctors, is becoming common among teenagers. Yeast infection can be sexually transmitted, but one may catch it in other ways.
For example, one sexually active teenager may infect others who are not sexually active, by sharing, basins, towels, etc.
Other causes include birth control pills over use of antibiotics, corticosteroid mediation, or iron deficiency.
Symptoms of yeast infection include a thick whitish vaginal discharge. In rare cases yeast infection may enter the circulatory system causing serious problems.
Considerations:
Our warm and humid climate plus poor hygiene habits create a favourable environment for yeast and molds to thrive.
The mode of contamination for fungal and mold infections is by direct contact with the infected person from public swimming pools, toilets or shared clothing, hats, beddings, towels, basins, sponges, scrubbing stones and grooming articles such as combs and brushes.
Hence it is important for school administrators as well as parents to sensitise children about personal hygiene and methods of preventing infections that can be expensive to treat.
Recommendations:
To prevent athlete’s foot and jock itch infections; After swimming, or at any other time, wash well your feet and groin area with plenty of soap and water. Thoroughly rinse, towel dry. Make sure the areas are totally dry.
Use cotton socks and underwear. Change both daily.
Avoid synthetic underwear and socks. Synthetic fibre increases sweating, at the same time it is not absorbent. As such, it creates favourable conditions for the multiplication of molds, yeast, and other germs.
When infected, wash with anti-fungal soap rinse and dry well. Dust with anti fungal powder during the day. Apply anti fungal cream at bedtime.
Wash socks and underwear in jik. Make sure they are well dried. If possible have two pairs of shoes alternate them daily. This allows them to dry eliminating some of the micro-organism.
If the school allows, open sandals are better, because, they allow the feet to breath facilitating healing.
Ring worm infection is treatable with antifungal creams. After starting treatment all clothing and bedding should be washed in jik, or washed in boiling water for the duration of the treatment. This helps to prevent re-infection.
Tinea Versicolor can be prevented by not sharing clothing, towels or any other personal items.
To prevent Vaginal yeast infection, abstain from sex. If you are sexually active use a condom and stay faithful to one partner.
Mold and fungal infections may cause unpleasant body smell.
It is important to bear in mind that there are different mold and fungal infections. Therefore, it is strongly advisable to consult a doctor about the right treatment.
