THE Ssabaruuli, a self-styled cultural head of the 129 Baruuli-Banyara clans in Nakasongola, has stopped his subjects from singing the Buganda Anthem ahead of a ceremony to crown him king planned later this year.

Salongo Mwogezi Butamanya, who last month told his subjects to ignore their cultural attachment to Mengo, is to be crowned in Nakasongola, as part of a drive by the Baruuli to claim back their ebyaisye (ebyaffe).

The function organised by the Baruuli-Banyara cultural Trust will be funded by Mwogezi’s diaspora of subjects countrywide.

Johnston Butamanya, the spokesman for the Trust and deputy RDC Lira, said on Monday several fundraising ceremonies have been held towards the coronation.

Despite not being a hereditary cultural leader, the Ssaabaruuli claims to be the supreme cultural head of the Baruuli-Banyara, a minority tribe in Nakasongola.
