The World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered 1,000 metric tonnes of maize flour and beans to 36,000 households in the hunger-hit Karamoja.
WFP programme officer in Moroto, Mr. Abuysed Saiffuzzaman, said yesterday another 1,000 metric tonnes would be delivered today.
He said each household received enough food to last at least five days for a family of six persons.
“The relief assistance is calculated on the basis that each family member eats 450 grammes of maize flour per day,” he said.
He said 4,500 households benefited from Moroto district while 10,920 were served in Nakapiripirit district.
“A total of 20,500 households were served in Kotido,” Saiffuzzaman said.
Saiffuzzaman said the second consignment of 1,000 metric tonnes for another 15,442 households was expected in a week’s time.
“Once we receive it, the consignment will also be delivered,” Saiffuzzaman said.
He said a food needs assessment carried out last October and November identified 59,185 households in dire need of relief food.
He said Kotido got 532 tonnes of food.
