Professor Francis Omaswa, the Director General of Health, and State Minister for Health Mike Mukula disapproved work done on two theatres and doctors’ houses built at Serere and Kisilo health Centre Is in Soroti District.
Omaswa condemned the door shutters, taps and sinks already installed as not being the type meant for theatres.
He ordered for immediate replacement and fitting of the right plain surface door shutters, hand support taps and sinks ideal for theatre work. Mukula was irked after easily breaking the floor of the building with a stone when testing whether concrete was strong enough.
Mukula ordered for immediate arrest and persecution of the contractors, who had done shoddy work in the district. He directed the Soroti district engineer, Henry Tiberondwa to ensure that the contractors corrected their work within 30 days, or to take appropriate action against them if they failed to do so.
The Kisilo theatre, costing about sh64m, was constructed by solar hardware and managed by George Agom of Soroti.
Other contractors were Engebi Technical Services, who built a doctors’ house for sh11m, as well as Jefa Uganda Limited. But The New Vision did not establish who built Serere Health Centre for about sh64m.
The district engineer, Henry Tiberondwa, admitted that most constructors exhibited shoddy work and that it was a general problem affecting many construction firms in Soroti.
