UGANDA is now assured of fielding a World Cross-country team in Lausanne, Switzerland next week following a boost of four air-tickets from SN Brussels Airlines.
The offer to the junior men’s team was announced by the airline’s General Manager Geert Lemmen yesterday.
The economy class tickets, that will be handed over on Monday, have the team departing on Wednesday on a route that goes via the Belgian capital Brussels before connecting to Geneva.
Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation (UAAF) interim committee chairman Timothy Magala could not hide his joy. “It is a big step forward. We are very appreciative.”
The New Vision Printing and Publishing Company Ltd responded to the fundraising call by the young promising athletes, by offering advertising space, and connecting them to leading airlines SN Brussels.
Uganda’s junior athletes have won team bronze medals at the last three world cross country championships. Boniface Kiprop also won an individual bronze, and is a good bet to take gold at Lausanne on March 29.
Long distance coach Johnson Kasajja, in the hills of Kapchorwa with the team, said the offer will help raise the team’s preparations physically and psychologically.
“Morale will certainly increase now that my boys are sure that the trip is on.”
Kasajja’s relief is understandable. As coach of the junior side to last year’s world cross-country, he only confirmed the trip to Dublin two days to the race.
The interim committee, that is on a joint fundraising venture for the team with Olympic 400 meter bronze medallist Davis Kamoga, now has the task of raising sh5.4m for the remaining two athletes and a coach.
Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) on Wednesday opened up the offer with sh200,000 towards the trip.
The total UAAF budget is sh12.6m.
Six juniors are currently in camp. The team comprises Kiprop,18, Moses Kipsiro, 17, Simon Ayieko, 17, James Kibet ,18, Martin Kiplimo ,17, and Isaac Kiprop, 17. Ends
