LT Gen. Moses Ali, the Second Deputy Premier, has announced he is a full UPDF officer ready to be deployed anywhere.
“I am waiting to be deployed anywhere, anytime. I am now subject to the NRA Code of Conduct. If my Commander- in-Chief deems it fit to deploy me to play a more prominent or practical role to end the LRA terrorism, I am ready. But I respect the work being done by Lt. Gen. salim Saleh and other peace team members,†he said.
Ali was yesterday answering questions at the President’s Office weekly media briefing coordinated by the minister of Information, Basoga Nsadhu.
The recently promoted Ali attributed the suffering of about 800,000 internally displaced people in northern Uganda to the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels.
Explaining the background to his and Maj. Gen. Ali Bamuze’s recent promotions, he said his collaboration with President Yoweri Museveni stretches back more than 20 years.
He lashed out at the Uganda People’s Congress de facto leader in Uganda, James Rwanyarare, for saying his promotion was ‘merely political and not based on any military achievements’.
“I am a soldier by profession. I joined the army in 1968. Does he have any authority to promote a Captain or even someone of a lower rank?†Ali asked.
He declared his support for the on-going US-led coalition attack on Iraq since President Museveni backs the US fight against terrorism.
“I support what my Commander-in-Chief supports. He (Museveni) supports the US in the war against Iraq, I support him,†Moses Ali said.
Ali, just returned from Saudi Arabia to negotiate a loan for his businesses from the Islamic Development Bank said he was not keen to facilitate former President Amin’s return home from Saudi Arabia.
“Did you know that Amin actually fired me in public interest on July 27, 1978? I was in the village in Adjumani when Kampala fell and we ran to Sudan. It was a blessing for me. That is his (Amin) problem if he wants to return. I have too many things to do. I don’t have the time to think for him. I did not even meet him while in Saudia the other day,†he stressed.
He said he met Museveni in Libya in 1980 and they agreed to jointly wage war against the Milton Obote regime. “We maintained peace in West Nile. In June 1986 our Uganda National Rescue Front we formed in 1979 in Sudan negotiated with President Museveni in Entebbe and integrated our forces into the NRA. Our links with President Museveni are old and constructive.â€
Ali recalled his arrest in April 1990 at the gate of the Entebbe State House by “some malicious peopleâ€, his treason trial and eventual acquittal. “But I am not bitter. I did not sue Government. I forgave. Some malicious people harassed Bamuze and others into exile in Zaire where they formed UNRF 2. But all that ended well recently when we persuaded them to talk and surrender to government. He is now a Maj. Gen.â€
