THE state minister for the elderly and disabled, Florence Nayiga, has appealed to property developers to put ramps for wheel chairs and step-rail guards in buildings.
Speaking at the launch of the Wheel Chair Project at Butabika Hospital recently, Henry Baryayebwa, the commissioner for disabilities, said it would ease the movements of the disabled within buildings. Baryayebwa represented Nayiga.
“The disabled form 10.4% of Uganda’s population. It is being insensitive if society does not consider these people,†Nayiga said.
“People constructing buildings should put in place ramps for wheel chairs and step-rail guards. Toilet facilities for disabled also need to be catered for on top of other facilities,†she said.
The Rotary Club of Port Bell donated 80 wheel chairs worth about sh24m.
The club president, Emmanuel Tumuhairwe, said they had received 240 wheel chairs worth $36,000 from Canada.
