OVER 20 Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels commanded by Joseph Kony’s second-in-command, ‘Brig.’ Vincent Otti were killed by the army during a UPDF air raid in Kitgum last Sunday.
The overall intelligence officer in charge of Operation Iron Fist in northern Uganda, Lt. Col. Otema-Awany, said at least 30 rebel captives were rescued.
He said the battles were on the Pager river banks and at Acholi Ranch in Lacek-Ocot, Aruu county in Pader and Kitgum districts.
The army spokesman based in northern Uganda, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, however, in a press release yesterday indicated that the UPDF killed at least 12 LRA fighters within Acholi Ranch, while two others were killed by the UPDF 23 Battalion commanded by one Maj. Musisi.
He said the number brings to 26, LRA fighters killed by UPDF in air raids between March 23 and 26.
The press release did not, however, disclose when the raid occurred and whether some civilians were rescued, killed or injured.
“We punished them heavily during the raid and we shall continue to show them (rebels),” Lt. Paddy Ankunda yesterday told The New Vision in Gulu.
