MTN Uganda, a telecommunications operator, has upgraded its sim cards from 16 kilobytes to 32.

The old sim cards have been in use by almost all MTN Uganda’s subscribers since October 1998 when the compnay launched its operations here.

Philip Besiimire, (pictured right) MTN Uganda spokesman, said Wednesday, the new sim cards, have better memory and more space of up to 300 names in their phone books.

They also have an extended menu that includes “MTN Uganda Services”, from which a selected range of key words is available.

The SMS Info Service includes news headlines, sports news, forex rates, commodity prices, television schedules and inspiration among others.

Besiimire said in order to request for the information, the customers scroll through the menu for the desired request.

He said MTN Uganda would continue to make access to its services even quicker and convenient for its customers.

He said the new sim cards would save the customer the hassle of having to type in a key word when requesting for information because the words already exist on the sim cards, Besiimire explained.

“MTN Uganda is once again the first to introduce services such as these. This is another value-added service from MTN,” Besiimire said.

He said MTN Uganda would continue to lead the market in innovation.

He said customers can upgrade to the new simcards at sh15,000 from MTN Uganda service centres or purchase totally new sim cards from any of their outlets throughout the country at sh30,000.

“The old 16 kilobyte sim cards are still operational. Customers do not necessarily have to change. All new sim cards in the MTN Uganda outlets will now have the 32 kilobyte capacity,” Besiimire said.

He, however, said the new sim cards might not be compatible in the old generation handsets.

“The customer services advisors in all MTN Uganda outlets will advise customers which handsets are not compatible, although all the latest mobile phone handsets models support the new sim cards,” Besiimire said.

MTN Uganda has since last year been carrying out sensitisation programmes to teach subscribers how to use their services.

The campaign has been extended to upcountry.
