Ugandan youth football was given a goal-feast at Officer’s Mess in Makindye recently, when two football teams, Nanganda ‘A’ and Nanganda ‘B,’ decided to fix their match to protest against corrupt officials. The teams felt cheated by officials of the tournament, organised by Friends of Football, a local NGO.

Eye-witnesses said the officials, Butindi and Serumaga, ordered the two teams to play against each other. They were the top two teams. Sources said the first two teams were not supposed to play one another at that stage, but officials decided to contradict their own rules by changing them to suit their own interests, which favoured a third-placed team known as ‘Juventus’. Seven minutes after kick-off, the score charts were reading 5-5.

Goalkeepers of both teams were seen faking ridiculous dives. Defenders employed false Premiership tackle skills, and of course all their strikers were brilliant that afternoon. Some had 10 goals to their name. Concerned spectators bitterly blamed one of the officials for always tarnishing football programs in the division.
