NATIONAL champion Charlie Lubega recovered in the opening section and clung onto the lead to win the MOSAC Garden City Rally yesterday.
Lubega (Mitsubishi Evo4) was 1.21 minutes quicker than Emma Katto (Toyota Celica ST185) on the 40-km rough and tight section in which overnight leader Moses Lumala lost six minutes when he broke a suspension and got puncture. Katto did not finish the rally.
TOTAL sponsored Lubega, who took five of the day’s six wet stages to clock one hour 50.07 minutes, left Katto amazed by his (Lubega) superb performance in first section.
“We didn’t get a problem and Charlie beat us by over one minute in the rough section,†Katto said.
Lubega’s third straight win extended his National Rally Championship tally to 240 points — fifteen ahead of Caltex Rally Team’s Moses Lumala, who claimed second position.
Katto was sidelined by a timing chain on the transport section while heading for Kajoji for the final section.
Kuku Ranjit overcame pressure from Arthur Blick to complete a 1-2-3 finish for Caltex Rally Team. Arthur had closed into within one second of Kuku midway the rally but got a puncture in the last section.
Dipu Ruparelia and Arthur were fourth and fifth respectively.
Umar Mayanja and Issa Numba’s result had not been posted by press time. Ends
