No Federal Monarchy

31st March 2003

THE POLITICAL shape of Uganda has now been re-opened for debate.

THE POLITICAL shape of Uganda has now been re-opened for debate.
President Museveni even said that the issue of federal government could be re-examined at the weekend National Movement Conference.
Many countries have federal units, or autonomous regional areas, but this should be handled with extreme caution in the case of Uganda.
The supporters of the Buganda kingdom are the driving force behind the call for federalism. Yet government and the constitution permit districts to amalgamate to create larger units.
That this has not happened is a sign that not all Baganda support federo. An administrative monarchy is a historically outmoded form of government that Uganda should avoid in future. However there could be sound logic in amalgamating the now excessive number of districts into four or five large regions including Buganda.
