196 arrested in Gulu

THE Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) on Monday arrested at least 100 civilians and 96 UPDF soldiers in Gulu municipality, report Dennis Ojwee and Chris Ochowun.
The arrests were carried out in an early morning swoop conducted by the Garrison commander at the UPDF fourth Division, Capt. Opiyo.
The army spokesman based in northern Uganda, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, yesterday said the swoop aimed at looking for defaulters, suspected thugs and UPDF soldiers and officers who roam the town on unofficial work.
Ankunda said screening of the suspects was going on.
