THE Danish government has donated sh714m for the post primary education of 200 underprivileged children from the Acholi sub-region.
Thomas Djurhuus, the Danish deputy head of mission in Uganda, said this on Tuesday while handing over the donation in Kitgum.
He described the donation as ‘a drop in the ocean’ that demonstrated Denmark’s desire for peace and development in the Acholi sub-region.
“We sympathise with the suffering of Acholi people and it is our sincere wish that peace returns to the region as soon as possible. This donation marks the beginning of restoring hope in Acholi land,” Djurhuu said.
Retired bishop Baker Ochola, the chairman of the Acholi Education Initiative, said the donation was a timely response to the suffering people in the Acholi sub-region.
“We appreciate the donation from the good people of Denmark. It was a response to the initiative of Acholi people to give their children a future,” Ochola said.
He appealed to other donors to emulate Denmark.
He said Pader, Kitgum and Gulu districts would each have 66 children benefiting from the scholarships.
