OFF-SEASON transfers saw giants Falcons, Power, Rhino and Sky Jammers lose some of their star players to MTN basketball league debutantes Kampala International University (KIU) and Nkumba University Marines — a welcome development that will stiffen competition for playoff berths.
Power that lost Isaac Afidra, Isaac Mawiwi and Gilbert Kaboha to KIU showed they were still strong despite defeat to Falcons in a tense encounter.
Veteran Charles Baryamujura back after one season at Nsambya Sharing, combined well with Julius Wapera and Marvin Keronga to give Power a 14 point lead on 40-26 early in the second half. Falcons clawed back to level 50-50 midway the last quarter.
Little Nathan Bisamunyu, a permanent figure on the Falcons bench last season, saved the day with the game tied on 68-68 when he sunk in a winning three-point shot on the dot of time.
Without departed Benard Mufutu, Nimrod Kaboha and Paul Onyango and with Andrew Tendo and Sam Obol absent, victorious Falcons lined up a makeshift team with the Malinga brothers Henry and Eric as big names.
Dominick Onyuthi and John Soita, who cashed in on coach Ronald Kaboha’s limited options to make the starting five, impressed.
KIU made easy work of depleted Sky Jammers without 2001 MVP Norman ‘Magic’ Blick, Donald Blick and Banis Ankunda who joined Marines. But the Jinja boys who have recruited Jeff Wamboka from Power are capable of getting their act together.
Jammers’ captain Godwin Khisa expects guard Hakim Iga to rejoin the team and another new recruit Moses Ochan to boost the attack next time.
Warriors who have maintained their team and Rhino who have recruited massively from their junior ranks after losing Alex Ochola and the Aciko brothers Albert and Richard to Marines and KIU respectively, should not be ruled out of contention.
