THE countdown to the Tivoli, Gothia and Haarlem Cups in Denmark, Sweden and Holland has started for the defending champions, the Kampala Kids League (KKL) youth team.

The KKL technical team has trimmed the side to a sizable squad and have started intensive non-residential training at Kabira Country Club.

Most of the boys that won the U-13 Tivoli and Gothia youth cups last year are in the 18-man squad preparing for the U-14 competitions in July.

The KKL side are also preparing an U-11 boys team to compete for the Tivoli and Gothia World Youth cups. 14 boys from KKL, Friends of Football, Nile Academy and the Mercy Street Children’s Orphanage are being prepared for their first trip to Europe.

Rwenzori Water are providing the squad with drinking water during training sessions every Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Club Five at Makerere University has developed a special 14-week fitness programme for the U-14 boys aimed at an improved stamina.

The team has also started following a nutritious and balanced protein and carbohydrate diet that includes milk, fish, meat, fruit and vegetables.

“A balanced diet, exercise and training are all very important. Last year we spent 12 weeks preparing the boys for Europe,” KKL commissioner, Trevor Dudley said.

“This year we have to make sure the boys receive the best possible care.”

KKL are however still looking for a sponsor to provide them with the required milk quantities.
