A GRADE II magistrate in Mbarara was on Thursday arrested for allegedly soliciting a sh200,000 bribe from a litigant.
The Mbarara regional Police commander, Edward Ochom, alleged that the magistrate was arrested while taking the bribe.
He identified him as Sunbays Bikanyire of Rugaga, Bukanga county in Mbarara.
Ochom said detectives were tipped off by a litigant from whom the magistrate had solicited money.
He said Kamanyire was presiding over a land case involving two people whom he could not name for investigative purposes.
Detectives at the Mbarara Central Police Station said Bikanyire had demanded the money to rule in the litigant’s favour.
Ochom said Bikanyire had been given sh70,000 as partial payment and was due to receive the remaining sh130,000 on Thursday.
He said the trap was arranged by the office of the Inspector General of Government, who gave the detectives the money to take to Bikanyire. Ends
