By David Muwanga A company owned by The Prince of Wales, Dutchy Originals, has expressed interest in organic ginger from Uganda. “They (Dutchy) wrote to us on March 26, 2003 to find out whether we can supply organic ginger to Prince Charles’s company,†Uganda Investment Authority (UIA)executive director, Maggie Kigozi said in Kampala on Wednesday. “We have informed that we have identified a company, Amfri-Farms Limited, which deals in organic products including organic ginger. The company is certified to produce and market organic products by the Institute of Market-ecology (IMO) in Switzerland,†she said. Kigozi said the company can produce six to eight tonnes of organic ginger per week. “But since we are now experiencing a dry season, they can only supply two tonnes per week between now and July, then from August 2003-2004 production can raise up to five tonnes a week,†she said in a letter dated April 9, addressed to the Uganda’s High Commission in London. Dutchy Originals, sent the expression through the High Commission. She said that the type of ginger produced in Uganda is white/cream in colour and it is not as big as that produced in Brazil. “Our ginger is stronger in taste and the company is already exporting its organic ginger. So we feel it has the ability to supply,†she said. “Production of ginger in the country is not a problem. In fact we haven’t been mobilising farmers to grow it. But since market has been identified, we need more farmers to take on organic farming even in other products,†she added. Ends
