VETERAN doctor and former medical superintendent of Lacor hospital Dr. Piero Corti has died.

The 78-year old Italian doctor passed away on Easter Sunday in Milan Hospital, Italy.

According to Dr. Bruno Corrado, the deputy director of Lacor Hospital, Dr. Corti died of cancer. He left Gulu at the end of January this year for medical check in Italy.

Dr. Bruno said burial arrangements would be announced later but indicated that the late Corti would be buried in Lacor Hospital next to his late wife, Dr. Lucille Corti, who died of HIV/AIDS, contracted while treating patients in the same hospital.

Corti was born in Besana Briazana, Milan, in 1925 in a family of six brothers and four sisters.

Since their arrival in 1961, the couple had been living in Gulu and providing valuable medical services to the population.

The news about Dr. Corti yesterday took Gulu town by surprise. Shocked residents converged in small groups lamenting the tragedy.

Others were overheard saying that without the two Cortis and Dr. Matthew Lukwiya, Lacor Hospital would never be the same again.

Dr. Lukwiya, the then medical superintendent, died of the dreaded ebola disease in December 2000 after taking over the leadership of Lacor hospital from Dr. Corti.
Lukwiya was declared a hero and a fund was set up for his family.
