THE death toll from the Monday ambush by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels of Joseph Kony on the Adjumani-Gulu road has reached 16.
Sources yesterday said three more people, including a soldier and a pregnant woman who had earlier been admitted to Lacor hospital, have died.
The three were among those the injured when the rebels hit a Fuso lorry, registration number UAD221X, in a convoy of vehicles travelling to Gulu. at least 10 people were killed and several injured.
Adjumani district chairman Nixon Owole said the incident occurred between Palukere and Pawel.
The rebels are said to be among the group that recently entered from the Sudan, having crossed into the country near Bibia on the Sudan-Uganda border.
Army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza, however, insisted yesterday that only five people had died and 16 were injured.
While regretting the new LRA incursions, Bantariza assured the population that the UPDF would handle the situation.
“These people seem to have gone on a fully fledged attack on the civilians, but the army is not taking this lying down. We are deploying accordingly,” Bantariza said.
Meanwhile, the LRA rebels on Sunday killed one UPDF soldier and two civilians on Labongo Gali, 30km on the Amuru-Gulu road.
The rebels also hit a pick-up truck at 2:00pm the day the Adjumani-Gulu road ambush occurred.
The rebels are said to be under the command of Vincent Otti, Kony’s deputy.
The Adjumani-Gulu road has become increasingly risky to travellers.
On Friday a UPDF major, Willy Mukasa was killed by the rebels on Amuru-Wicere road in Kilak county.
