MTN Uganda, the telecommunications operators have clarified that the new 32-kilbye sim cards are optional to the old subscribers, writes Stephen Ilungole

“What we do is to give the opportunity to our customers in terms of new services but we don’t force them to use the new service and they don’t have to because it is a matter of freedom of choice,” said Erik van Veen, MTN Uganda chief marketing manager. He, however, said as their customers will be buying new phones and new sim cards for whatever reasons, they are strongly urged to take onto the 32-kilobyte sim cards.

“There will be old model phones, which may not be compatible with the new sim cards, but as you walk in our service centres to purchase sim cards, make sure they are compatible. If your phone is not compatible, we shall charge you sh15, 000 for a replacement,” said van Veen.

He said they have been issuing the 16-kilobytes sim cards since they launched in October 1998 “but we are now issuing the more upto date sim cards of upto 32 kilobytes, twice the number of memory.”

“This means you can put in more names on your sim card upto 300 names. The new cards also have more intelligence and features,” he said.

He said the old cards were “pretty good. There is nothing is wrong with them. But this is hitech industry. We have got to continue with innovation.”
