SIR— I want to believe that The New Vision misquoted the Inspector General of Police, Maj-Gen Katumba Wamala, in the article, “No apologyâ€, published on Easter Monday. Maj-Gen Katumba Wamala was quoted as saying that he has no apology for suspected robbers killed by mob justice. “The crime level in the country needed radical changeâ€, he was quoted as saying. However, this is in complete contrast to what he was quoted by Sunday Vision in June 2001, where he said mob justice in the country had reached alarming levels, with up to 1,000 people having been lynched in a period of ten years. At that time he called for a concerted effort to curb mob justice. But if it is true that the Inspector General of Police has allowed mob justice to operate side by side with the Police and the Judiciary, then he had better resign.
