Guests at the graduation party of Zachary Kiyingi, an Urban Planning student, were stunned when his father, Mzee Kagugube, gave his son a ‘special’ gift package: a saucepan and a charcoal stove (sigiri).

During speeches at the party, held in Nansana, Mzee took to the microphone and thanked his son for reading hard. He said he had something special to give his son in the presence of all the guests.

Two big boxes wrapped with paper were brought before Mzee Kagugube. Every guest looked on in anticipation for what the father had to give the son. The boxes were unwrapped and inside the boxes there was a sigiri and a big, stainless steel saucepan.

After presenting the gift, Kagugube had this to tell his son: “You have graduated today. I’m giving you this sigiri and sauce pan to go and start your own home after this party. I don’t expect you to sleep in my house.”

He went on to say that he assumed the other gifts to his son by family and friends included other essential household utensils like glasses and cups. The guests screamed with laughter.

Mzee Kagugube reiterated that his son had got everything needed to start a home and should not come back to his house.
