AT least one student was critically injured and another arrested by police after a fight broke out between students of Ntare School, Mbarara High School and Ngabo Academy at Kakyeka stadium yesterday.
The schools were in a post–primary schools gala to select a team to represent Mbarara district at the national post-primary schools Coca Cola football tournament to be hosted in Mbale.
District sports chairman Ephraim Kakuru and eye witnesses said the fighting broke off after student’ spectators of the three schools could not agree over who occupies the pavilion.
“It was confusion all over. Students started hitting each other with whatever they could find,” an eyewitness said.
Anti-riot police was called in to disperse the irate students.
AIP Justus Mbaramye, the deputy commander of anti riot squad, said a stone hit one of the policemen as he fired a teargas canister to disperse the students.
The injured student was rushed to Mbarara Teaching Hospital in critical condition by police after he was hit by a rubber bullet.
Doctors could not immediately identify the injured as he neither carried identification papers nor could he talk but officials at Kakyeka said he is from Ntare School.
“He is in critical condition. He suffered severe head injuries,” one of the three doctors working on him said.
Police said it also arrested Arnold Tumwesigye, a student of Ntare, as he pelted stones. It said several students carried clubs. Ends
