AT least 12 passengers died on the spot and two were rushed to hospital with serious injuries when a Coca Cola lorry rammed into a commuter taxi at Kyengeza, 42 kilometres on the Masaka-Kyotera highway.
The accident occurred on Saturday at about 8:00pm when a heavy duty lorry number UAA 414A carrying crates of soda, rammed into an omnibus number UAD 676M and killed 12 out of the 14 people on board.
This follows another road carnage on Friday when a Isuzu tipper rammed into a minibus from Bweyale in Masindi killing all 14 aboard.
The police identified some of the dead as Archilleo Matovu, the driver and resident of Kalisizo and his conductor, Ahmed Mugera of Kirimya in Masaka.
Others were John Ssekatta, 55 a matooke dealer at St Balikuddembe market, and a resident of Mengo, Gertrude Ssebbaale, the chairperson of Kasambya LC1 Zone in Kyotera town, Grace Mukisa, a student of Jinja Modern SS, Willy Bbaale, a Laboratory technician in Kalisizo hospital.
Other deceased were not readily identified.
Survivors included Goretti Nabakka (40), a business woman in Kyotera and Goretti Nakalanzi, 32.
The taxi was heading towards Masaka. Eye witnesses said the taxi driver attempted to dodge a drunkard who had fallen off his bicycle. The advancing truck hit the taxi in the sides, crushing most of the passengers. Human fresh was still stuck on the truck front guards and in the taxi.
Civilians removed the bodies and rushed the injured to Kalisizo hospital later referred to Kito Clinic. A Police truck transported the bodies to Kalisizo hospital mortuary.
Sources however reported that the “rescue” team stole money, phones and other items from the bodies. Anxious crowds jammed the mortuary to glance at the bodies in case they knew some victims. Ends
