After decades of animosity, about 300 Pian Karimojong pastoralists from Nakapiripirit district are negotiating with the people of Magoro sub-county, Katakwi district to allow them graze and cultivate crops in the area.
The resident district commissioner, Ndiwa Chemaswet and Magoro LC3 chairman Emongot Alemu recently said a team of pastoralist was in the district to hold discussions with the local community in Magoro sub-county.
“Their intention is for the Iteso to allow them graze their cattle while they (Pian) would in turn offer their oxen to the host community to open up gardens for cultivation,” Chemaswet said.
He said the Karimojong expected to benefit from the harvest.
Chemaswet was briefing officials from the Human rights and democratisation programme of the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) on the security situation in the district.
Frans Mikail Jansen and Kennedy Tumutegyereize from DANIDA and UHRC commissioner Veronika Bichetero Eragu were in Katakwi district to identify areas of intervention on peace building and conflict resolution.
Chemaswet said poachers from the Pian-Upe wildlife sanctuary initiated the dialogue.
He, however, said traders from Katakwi and Nakapiripirit districts were also desirous to re-open business between Magoro and Lolacat in Pian county. Ends
