A HEAVY downpour lasting more than six hours yesterday morning left all flood prone spots in and around Kampala drenched.
More than seven houses at the Ntinda Stretcher area were filled with water up to the window, level from the wetland that drains Ntinda and the Kyambogo areas.
It is not clear whether the owners of the houses were around. Across to the left, residents had sought refugee at the neighbour’s who was not affected.
The matooke and yam gardens around the area, below the Shell petrol station were washed away.
Police Fire Brigade made responses to a number of areas that were affected by the rampaging waters in different parts of the city.
Joseph Mugisa, the chief fire Officer, said they rushed to Mengo where a man was reportedly swept away by the water. The New Vision could not get details of the man’s fate.
Mugisa said they were told that the Electoral Commission offices were flooded.
“We were also not spared here (Fire Brigade headquarters) despite the nearly completed works on the Nakivubo channel around here.”
The Kyambogo area on the Kampala-Jinja highway was the most hit because of a yet to be finished drainage channel.
Water levels at that spot rose above the waist of a pedestrian who could be seen trapped at the spot.
Saloon cars were most affected.
Some cars were stuck midway the spot, which stretches from around the turn off to the Pepsi Cola plant to the Concorp offices.
Young men around the area sprung into action, rolling up their sleeves to make a quick Sunday morning buck as they pushed the unfortunate motorists to safety.
The newly installed Crane Access auto teller machine area was submerged.
One resident in Kyebando Kisalosalo zone told The New Vision on phone that her residence was flooded. “I can drive out of my house but not out of my compound,” she said. Ends
