BUDDO Junior’s Mike Tamiro put up an outstanding performance in the national trials held at Kyambogo University ground on Saturday.

The poorly attended event also marked the World Athletics Day celebrations.

The 17-year-old national primary schools champion clocked 15:10.9 to finish second behind Ndejje’s Wilson Kipkemei (14:49.7) in the 5000m.

He however beat seasoned athletes in UPDF’s Job Sikoria (15:13.2) and Nkumba’s Joseph Nsubuga (15:14.2) to finish third and fourth respectively.

Martin Toroitich owns the national record of the 5000m at 13:34.84, which he set in Roveroto, Italy on August 29 last year.

Schoolmates Salome Pache also took the 400m (1:03.44) and 800m (2:19.7) top honours while Juliet Chebet (19:42.2) and Sena Cherop (20:20.9) finished first and second in the 5000m.

The organisers attributed Buddo Juniors’ good performance to perfect preparations.

The school took part in numerous competitions prior to the games.

On the other hand, the poor turn up was blamed on the lack of proper communications channels.
